Peter undertook his legal studies at Canterbury University and moved to Greymouth shortly after completing his degree in 1980.
Peter formed the legal practice of Carruthers and Wetherall with David Carruthers in Greymouth in 1984 and was for 34 years a partner in that firm. When the premises of the partnership were severely damaged in a fire in June 2018, the partners decided to amalgamate their practice with the firm of Hannan and Seddon with whom they had had a long association.
Peter has engaged in a wide number of areas of legal practice but has more recently centred his practice on all areas of property conveyancing, wills and estates and family law. A particular focus of Peter’s practice has always been family law including issues surrounding the welfare of children such as day-to-day care and relationship property issues. Peter is regularly appointed by the court to represent children in court proceedings and is also appointed to represent people with disabilities.
Peter has been married to Margaret for 34 years and is actively involved in the local church community. Peter’s other outside interests include a passion for art history and keeping up with his grandchildren.
Hannan & Seddon became part of Corcoran French on 1 April 2021.
